The park, with over 250 hectares of land, is one of the largest parks in any inner-city in Europe and has important part to play in Leeds history as well as being a much loved attraction throughout Yorkshire.

Over a million people visit the park every year to visit the attractions within the gardens such as Tropical World and the Canal Gardens. Many visitors also come to some of the large open air concerts that have graced Roundhay park with the like of Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson and other public events.

The park was originally used by the monks of Kirkstall Abbey after they where granted the land for the use of smelting furnace in the mid-twelfth century. It was then thought to have been a hunting ground for the De Lacy family after William the Conqueror granted the land to Ilbert De Lacy as a present after years of friendship and loyalty. Later in 1803 the Roundhay Park was bought by Thomas Nicholson and in 1811 work started on the design and building of the mansion which took some fifteen years to complete. The park was then officially presented to the people of Leeds by Prince Arthur as the family had no heirs to take over he estate.

The Friends of Roundhay Park is a local charity made up of local residents which was formed in 1996. They set up the organization to improve and enhance the park. They currently have over 400 members who currently help the visitors get the most out of this beautiful park.
